Peoplesource.ie - Newsletter - June 2022

Good vibes only this month!

In the (good) news this month
We are declaring this month a good news month! We know what’s going on in the world, we are not ignoring it, we just want a short break to focus on fun & more fun. Don’t worry, we can get back to total reality at some point but for now, it’s positive vibes! A quick thank you first to everyone who reads the newsletter. We get some lovely feedback which we really appreciate. Thank you!

We have fabulously long summer evenings, major concerts, big festivals and holidays to look forward to, not to mention the tantalising smell of BBQ in the air. Delicious! Check out the Big Grill this August

Here are a few ‘Best of’ lists to help you plan & enjoy your summer!
Concerts - Books - Cocktails - Movies (well the 10 best so far for 2022 according to the Irish Times!)
Festivals - after Glastonbury last weekend, expectations will be very high for all festival goers!
Podcasts - our own two fav Irish podcasts are - GUBU and Foreign Agent

For any history buffs...launched this week is the fascinating Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland - according to the website, this is an all-island & international collaborative research project working to create a virtual reconstruction of the Public Record Office of Ireland which was destroyed in the opening engagement of the Civil War on June 30th 1922.

The (positive) figures...

The recent CSO census has put the population at over 5m – FIVE MILLION!  Can you believe it? For the first time since the famine! This time around though, we are a proud independent nation with a successful open economy and rightly taking our place in European and Global affairs. We have a very high standard of living, low unemployment and we remain one of the most generous nations on earth when it comes to helping others less fortunate. That’s good news and something to celebrate. Preliminary Results are here!

Dublin is among the 50 most expensive cities for expats, according to the latest ‘Mercer Cost of Living’ report, an improvement on their 2021 report, which is good news. We are less expensive than Hong Kong, anywhere in Switzerland, Paris, Amsterdam & Munich to name a few, more good news! Here the full list.

In recent weeks we have seen a welcomed reappearance of the corporate summer party, sports days and various other outings. Has your business got its staff together this summer yet?

We at PeopleSource have been delighted to sponsor the Young Professionals events over the past two years (on-line). Our first in-person event was held last week! The LGBTQI+ event was held in Nolita (def recommend a visit) this year, it was a beautiful sunny evening, bbq, Bingo and Lip Syncing, what more could you ask for.  As for the girl who Lip Sync’d to Bewitched, well, what a performance, Irish dancing included! She had the crowd in the palm of her hand. Well done!  For those looking for an event as mad as a box of frogs I think Pride month always has a lot to offer, it’s great to see it back in full swing. A big thanks to all who organised a fab event.

Sports roundup

Let’s kick off with golf; take a bow Leona Maguire who recently blitzed the field on the last day making up seven shots to get to a play off before finishing second in the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan. Maguire, who has now shot up eight places to world #17.

Hats off to Padraig who wins the US Senior open in his first year on the Seniors’ Tour, he could definitely make a big impact on the tour with more ‘majors’ to follow!

So now we’re down to four in the race for Sam. 2022 has thrown up some interesting games and results but in contrast three of the four quarter finals were fairly uninteresting predictable affairs; the exception being the madcap thriller (fisticuffs and all!) that saw Galway defeat Armagh on penalties. It’s a shame then to opine that the most interesting game produced the least likely finalist with smart money betting on a Derry Vs Kerry (just maybe Dublin) final.

The Liam McCarthy (for the fastest field sport in the world remember!) will be contested by four worthy counties and while Limerick and Clare supporters will be giving it everything we can’t help feeling that all neutrals will be praying for a Galway-Kilkenny showdown, or Cody Vs Sheflin as it will undoubtedly be billed.

In soccer, it was nice to see Ireland scoring a few goals against Scotland and that was following a gritty draw against Ukraine.  While the Senior Women's National Team had a lovely 9 – 0 win on Monday.

We had just gone to print last month before Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle overturned Leinster in the European Champions Cup.  We’re claiming it as a great day for Irish rugby. Win, lose or draw we’re looking forward to a cracking tour of New Zealand, although the first result is not good news, let’s hope the rest of the game are!

If you have never been before, why not plan a day at the races at one of our many race courses. There is midweek, evening and weekend action both on the flat and over the jumps every week and it’s a great day out.  Give it a try. Here’s the 2022 fixture list to make it even easier!

Entertainment
OK, is it just me or have we gone into a time warp? Top Gun is top of the box office, Kate Bush is top of the pops and everyone is talking about Elvis!

It has been great to see a whole new generation discovering the wondrous talent of Kate Bush while the oldies among us are saying “see, we had brilliant music too!”. For the occasional rainy night 80s fans can relive the Top Gun magic in ‘Maverick’ and we are all dying to see what Baz Luhrmann does with the Elvis story, safe to say that he never does things by halves, but any movie with Tom Hanks in it gets our vote every time.

A word in support of the Irish Film industry, if you get a chance, find a cinema showing the Irish language movie An Cailin Ciuin with a revelatory performance from Carrie Crowley. It’s a beautiful story and so evocative of rural Ireland in the 70s, the antithesis of the big CGI blockbusters and highly recommended. Here's that list again and this movie is on it!

Guilty Pleasure or just guilty - Love Island - I know I'm old and the target audience is definitely not me, but really? Please tell me it's not just me!

Top Gun? No, just Top Jobs
Jobs are coming in at a very steady rate and if you are considering a move, give us a call. We also work with clients who know we know what they look for in a candidate and are happy to meet candidates for potentials roles they have in the near pipeline.
