Peoplesource.ie - Newsletter - November 2021

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Surely the Late Late Toy Show means the festive season has arrived? Did you watch it? Enjoy it?  Donate? Fair play to Revolut donating over €1m. So far over €6m has been raised for good causes. What a fantastic achievement.

I would like to start with saying a big thank you to you, our clients, candidates, connections and readers for the many messages of encouragement and positive feedback for our quirky little newsletter, would you believe it has been going six years now? Where did that time go?

Don’t forget, as usual, our loyal readers will have a chance to win a €100 One4All voucher at the end of this month’s edition, it's just above the 'latest available roles' section as you're scrolling! Better odds than winning the Lotto anyway and we don’t do rollovers.

So, the Covid hokey-kokey; just as we had our whole selves in we have to take our whole selves out again, for lovers of movies and musicals we can say we’re in Groundhog Day, or a time warp, take your pick.  Resilience has got us this far with our economy rebounding beyond expectations and candidate shortages for many roles.  Let’s hope we can continue to adapt and thrive.

Two summits, no peaks....

Both Cop26 and the Web Summit have come and gone, and was it just me, or were both remarkable for being unremarkable? Cop26 huffed and puffed but failed to catch the imagination with the ultimate focus being on wordplay and semantics. The saddest thing is that it will be remembered mostly for the iconic image of the Israeli Minister stuck outside because the venue was not wheelchair accessible. The Web Summit remains a major achievement in terms of its sheer scale but I wonder if its best days are behind it, it’s always dangerous when the founder becomes a bigger story than the event.

How's your profile....?

Some leaders like to fly high in the public eye and court publicity, speaking engagements and profile while others like to stay in the background, keeping themselves to themselves. If you are in the former group then perhaps you can take some tips from The Reputation Agency’s list of Top 10 social media influencer's for 2021? Click Here for the full list. One cautionary note from me – be careful what you wish for!

Thank the good Lord for Rugby.....

What a memorable autumn series we had with convincing and satisfying wins against Japan, our old bogey team of Argentina and of course New Zealand (again!). The style and manner of the wins made the results all the more exciting and we seem to have some real strength in depth in the squad now. I think Ireland can even take some credit for the heavy defeat the All Blacks suffered at the hands of Les Blues last weekend. Dare we dream going into the 2022 Six Nations?

What Liverpool started with a 5-0 win, Watford finished with a 4-1 drubbing to see Ole on his way out of Old Trafford; what odds they’ll go on to win in Europe now? The Premiership looks a very interesting three horse race at this point with Chelsea, City and ‘Pool fighting it out, hopefully right up to the final day.

Sporting kudos this month though goes to Shelbourne FC. Beaten 3-1 in the Ladies FAI Cup Final by Wexford Youths, word quickly got out that the FAI were investigating a possible irregularity with the registration of one of Wexford’s subs. Shels immediately issued a statement saying that they were fairly beaten by the better team on the day and wanted no further action taken. Sportsmanship not too often seen these days, the women once again showing the way! (Is sportswomanship a word? Should be.)

Tis the season……….

Before we get down to the serious business of eating our own body weight in chocolate and attempting to drink the Liffey dry (in alcohol volumes), a few thoughts;

Why not try and keep your Christmas shopping local this year, in Ireland at the very least but even in your community wherever possible. Here to help, is a comprehensive A – Z of Irish gift ideas put together by the lovely people at the Irish Examiner. Having spent an evening browsing through it, I think I have almost all my shopping done!

On a completely separate note - when I was searching for 'buy Irish' images on a certain site, one option offered was an image with 'Irish or not buy me a shot!' If I could insert 'eyes up to heaven' emoji here, I would.

And now a shameless plug for HUH Clothing, founded by Mark Donnelly. He spoke at the latest ACA Young Professionals webinar this month. A really great guy who has some lovely items of clothing with a message and 10% of all sales is donated to charity.

k

This is a great time of year for quality drama on both terrestrial and streaming channels, however, on the downside ‘I’m a celebrity’ is also back, so you can’t have everything! Every ‘best christmas movies of all time list’ is really only good for stimulating debate and arguments and this one is hopefully no exception (Die Hard, Batman….. Christmas?, what, no Griswolds? No Scrooge? And so on…..)

What does PeopleSource want for Christmas………..?

This is easy, and it won’t cost you a penny. Please follow us on LinkedIN and even better if you could like and share our posts when you see them, it would mean a lot to us and remember, with Karma, it will come back to you many times over.  A simple share or like from you could be the start of a life-changing career move for someone in your network, now there’s a Christmas present!

And speaking of Christmas and life-changing events, January is often the time when people seriously consider a new job.  My advice is to use some of the down time in December to think this through and perhaps contact some key recruiters (including PeopleSource hopefully) to better understand your options.

And of course, if you or your team happen to be hiring, we’d love to hear from you also.

Christmas in the sun, a hard sell………?

As many of you know, I work with Digicel (large telecoms company based in the Caribbean). I am currently working on three FC roles. These roles are not for the faint hearted, but they are for those looking to work internationally for two years, in a tax efficient environment. Salaries are $80,000 to $90,000 net annually plus there is an accommodation allowance, travel allowance, health cover and bonus potential. There are big savings to be made and great experience to be gained.  Realistically they would suit people travelling solo as only one visa is provided for the hire. If you fancy two years in the sun to save some money, do get in touch.

Competition Time....
