July 2019 newsletter

Jul 01, 2019

Hi all

One more full month left of the summer. Hopefully at this stage you have all taken some holidays, enjoyed the long summer evenings, had a dip in the sea and are now looking forward to the long weekend.

In the news…

It’s a week today since Boris Johnson (or BoJo as he is affectionately known) is now the leader of Britain’s Conservative Party and UK Prime Minister. He finally caught up with our Taoiseach yesterday, leaving it a full week before contacting him! What does this mean in diplomacy terms? Who was considering the ‘adult in the room’ in that conversation? We have a very interesting few months ahead. Who will blink first? If you’re interested watching the world of politics and social media collide, we would highly recommend ‘The Great Hack’ on Netflix.

On a more positive note, Shane Lowry won the Open Championship. The Co Offaly man finished top-10 in 2014 and missed the cut in each of the last four years and then goes on to win in style, holding his nerve. What does this teach us about resilience, tenacity and never giving up? The reports on Lowry all indicate he’s a hardworking and humble person. I hear he’s ‘Offaly’ nice too! Congratulations! In the same week, it was announced Ireland will host the 2026 Ryder Cup, estimated to bring in over €160m to the economy. A good month overall for Irish Golf.

We couldn’t produce our July newsletter without mentioning Love Island! Amber Gill and Greg O'Shea have been crowned this year’s winners. It was a surprising end to the series - as Tommy Fury and Molly-Mae Hague had been the bookies' favourites to win for several weeks. Amber is a beauty therapist and model from Newcastle, while Greg is a rugby player from Limerick, Ireland.

Finally, you still have time to choose that summer read. The Booker Prize long list was announced last week and Irish author Kevin Barry’s book Night Boat to Tangier has been selected. There are 19

books in total and the short list will be announced on 3rd September. https://thebookerprizes.com/fiction

In Sport…

In GAA it was a big weekend with the All Ireland semi-finals taking place. First up on Saturday Kilkenny rolled back the years to shock Limerick on a score line of 1.21 to 2.17. On Sunday Tipperary got the better of Wexford after an intense battle by only two points. The final in 3 weeks’ time which sees the old guards of Tipp and Kilkenny once again lock battle in what promises to be a classis.

We know it seems like ages ago at this stage, but it was only the start of the month. The US beat the Netherlands in the 2019 Women’s World Cup 2019. This is the 4th World Cup win. They certainly are the team to beat. Their celebrations did not be include a visit to the White House!

On another note…
