April 2019 newsletter

Apr 01, 2019

Hi all,

I hope you all enjoyed the long Easter weekend we recently had and your looking forward to another

long May Bank holiday one. Met Eireann said temperatures could be as high as 19C over the

weekend so fingers crossed.

In the news…

Unfortunately, in the news this month there was a lot of despair both on this Island and overseas. Lyra McKee, 29, was shot during riots ahead of the anniversary of the revolt that led to Irish independence from Britain. Dissident republican group the New IRA admitted the responsibility for killing. Also, in April the deadly blasts in Sri Lanka killed at least 300 people and left hundreds more injured. The attached was deemed a terrorist attack by religious extremists. Our prayers are with all the deceased and their families.

In local news April was the worst month on record for hospital overcrowding according to figures released from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

The INMO says 10,229 admitted patients were forced to wait without hospital beds in April 2019. This is an 8% increase on the same time last year. With local elections around the corner it will be interesting to see how this news will be treated.

Finally, I hope not too many of ye stayed up till 2am to catch the highly anticipated Game of Thrones episode ‘’The Battle of Winterfell’’. I for one don’t follow the show, but my housemates still haven’t stopped going on about it so I don’t think you would have been disappointed.

Special Mention …

A special mention goes to our very own Rachel Turbidy brother Niall on the release of his book ‘’Just One More Question’’ It’s a fascinating read about how the mind works and we wish him all the continued success with it. Please see link below if you would like to purchase it. https://www.easons.com/just-one-more-question-niall-tubridy-9781844884575?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1IfKna764QIVgoxRCh3mMgJiEAAYASAAEgLYQvD_BwE

In Sport …

Where else to start than the magical comeback of Tiger Woods. He rallied to win the Masters for the fifth time April the 13th, a comeback that goes well beyond the two-shot deficit he erased before a delirious audience at Augusta National that watched memories turn into reality. Woods had gone nearly 11 years since he won his last major, 14 years since that green jacket was slipped over his famous red shirt. Many would agree its one of the greatest comebacks of all time considering the injuries and personal life trauma he had to endure. Please see below video clip of how Tiger ended up proving his doubters wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJyfogJTEiY

Also, a very important month went by for the Rugby provinces of Ireland, with Munster losing to a strong Saracens side and Leinster getting the better of Toulouse at home. All roads lead to St James Park Newcastle on the 18th of May for what is sure to be a cracking final.
